In April 2018, a Brussels delegation, including Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the university hospital (UZ Brussel), set out to Chengdu to explore health collaboration opportunities with Chinese investors, hospitals, health centers, schools, and universities. The delegation was led by Mr. Guy Vanhengel, Brussels minister of finance, budget, and external affair.

Several highly relevant meetings were arranged with, a.o. Foreign affairs office of Sichuan Province, Foreign affairs office of Chengdu, Chengdu Medical City, Tianfu High-tech zone, Chengdu University of Technology, Sichuan University, and West Second University Hospital of Sichuan University.

Next to these meetings, an event called "invest in Brussels: opportunities in the health sector", was organized by Brussels Invest and Export and allowed Brussels project to present their interest in front of Chinese investors and health partners. A high level event on Brussel-Sichuan collaboration, arranged by the Belgian embassy in China, showed the governmental support for collaborations on both sides.

Results of the event

We were able to trigger great interest in a few health innovation cases that we are trying to bring to China. UZ Brussels got in touch with several hospitals and investors active in IVF. They are currently drafting a model that would allow their IVF world-leading expertise to be used in China or by Chinese patients. For two rehabilitation cases of Vrije Universiteit Brussel, we found several institutions that are open towards collaboration, for example the 81 Rehabilitation Center situated in Wenjiang District of Chengdu.
